lloyd benson's he dig at senator john quail in 1988. >> i knew jack kennedy. jack kennedy was a friend of mine. senator, you're no jack kennedy. >> memorable moments, but hardly game-changers. while presidential debates can affect the outcome of an election, vice presidential debates, like this week's upcoming match-up between vice president biden and his gop challenger paul ryan, are a different animal. >> you need to be able to see that each vice presidential candidate has hit the standard of readiness. they'll be ready in an emergency in a national crisis to step into the oval office and to take the reins of the presidency. beyond that, in terms of the actual debate itself, unless there is a stark killing or stark catching moment, it rarely changes the course of the debate. >> donna brazile says the first rule here is to do no harm. >> in terms of substance, try not to break any new ground. this is an audition for 2016. this is about 2012, and the top of the ticket. >> i don't like a damn thing about him. >> biden, who participated in more than 20 debates and forums in the 2008 camp

before. >> it's been done a couple of times actually. jack kennedy lowered tax increase growth rate. >> now you're jack kennedy? >> so who won? we asked folks who watched the debate who won. according to the cnn/orc poll 48% said ryan performed better. 44% gave it to joe biden. that's within the margin of error. let's get some perspective on this. jessica yellin is our chief white house correspondent. ron brownstein is the editorial director for the national journal. let's start with substance. there's been a lot of talk about style. i want you to listen to how each of the men handled the issue of libya, something that's in the news right now, and that deadly attack on the u.s. consulate. listen. >> this is becoming more troubling by the day. they first blamed the youtube video. now they're trying to blame the romney/ryan ticket for making this an issue. >> we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security again. and, by the way, at the time, we were told exactly -- we said exactly what the intelligence community told us, that they knew. >> jessica

kennedy and you're not jack kennedy, but that turned well for mr. quayle. >> he became the vice president of the united states. didn't he? a not so strong debate performance. overshadowed, out-debated by the elder lloyd benson back in 1988. i remember it well. my first president's campaign. and yet george h.w. bush went on to win the election. not just win the election, but win 40 states. 40 of the 50 states, george h.w. bush won in 1988. if anyone tells you what they know is going to happen on november 6th, i'd roll your eyes. a lot to talk about. two passionate guys representing the two ends of america's political, ideological spectrum. however, romney and obama lead the ticket. that's who people vote for on election day. >> passion and zingers and sound bites aside, in a 24/7 news cycle and only a couple days away from a very important presidential debate. how much sticking power will tonight have? >> a great question. one of the thingses that happens out of debates. what moments get replayed and replayed and replayed, not only on television but bounced around the internet, facebook, t

presidential debate was lloyd ben son against dan yale in 1988. you're no jack kennedy. didn't affect the outcome of the race. what matters here is the democrats have to re-establish a case both on the offense and really the defense. what they want to do and the port rat they want to paint of the republicans. president obama really failed to do either one of those things. he failed to identify a compelling second term agenda that he wants to put out, and he really didn't identify or reinforce the arguments that his ticket has made against the republicans for months, and i think there will be enormous pressure on the vice president to kind of move both of those lines of argument forward tonight. >> do you think we're going to hear from the vice president some of the things that the president did not mention, the 47% comment that mitt romney made, the role of bain capital, the issue of how much he pays in taxes? >> well, i think some of the things about romney himself. >> he has made arguments like that, repeatedly, dozen of times, it is central to his view of the debate about the role
